clay detox

People have used various types of clays for thousands of years to remove impurities and toxins from their skin and body. There are two mechanisms in which clay helps detox the body.

reduces permeability of gut wall

The protective mucosal layer in the gut wall (the innermost layer of the gastrointestinal tract) is regularly eroded due to a poor diet. When ingested clay binds with and reinforces this protective mucosal layer and enhances mucosal secretion thus offering protection from harmful toxins and pathogens.

binds directly to toxins

At a molecular level clay consists of alternative layers of positivity and negativity charged molecules that attract and bind to toxins, pharmaceuticals, and pathogens, including viruses, fungi, and bacteria.

four types of clay

1. White Clay

White Clay is a good for all skin types because it draws build-up out from beneath the surface of the skin and absorbs excess oil that may clog pores. The best clay mask for normal skin and mature skin. White Clay also works as a mild exfoliant. In addition to refining the surface of your skin to reveal a softened, purified, and clarified complexion, it may also reduce pore size.

2. Green Clay

Ideal for oily, combination, and acne-prone skin, green clay is great for restoring balance to skin. This powerful clay soaks up excess oil that may clog pores and lead to acne and imperfections, and doubles as a powerful, deep cleanser that helps to balance skin pH levels. As a bonus, Green Clay stimulates cell regeneration, leaving you with a seriously glowing complexion.

When combined with water to form a paste, this mask can help to remove product and oil build up and may also reduce the size of facial pores, making it ideal for excessively oily and acne prone skin.

3. Pink Clay

Perfect for dry and sensitive skin types, pink clay is an essential skin care ingredient for those wanting to reduce irritation and inflammation related to aggravating skin conditions including acne. Pink Clay is rich in Silica, which may help to improve skin elasticity and cell renewal, resulting in supple, younger-looking skin. Gently exfoliating and light on the skin, Pink Clay leaves skin feeling silky-soft and smooth. Plus, it can help to minimise blackheads and promote a radiant and balanced complexion.

4. Bentonite Clay

When it comes to effective detoxifying clay masks that deeply cleanse skin and draw out excess oil and impurities, it doesn't get much better than Bentonite Clay. Suitable for most skin types, this soft natural clay effectively absorbs and removes toxins in your skin, leaving it healthy, refreshed, and radiant. Add it to your skincare routine to reap plenty of Bentonite Clay benefits including purified skin, replenished vitamin and mineral levels, and light yet effective exfoliation.

How to use

Many commercial facial masks contain clays because of their clarifying effect on the skin. Some skin care masks contain bentonite, but a person can also make their own bentonite mask at home.

Mix bentonite clay powder with water to make a thick paste. Apply to the areas of skin that are prone to oil or acne. Leave the mask on for 20 minutes and rinse thoroughly. Repeat two or three times per week.

How to use

Mix up to 1 teaspoon (tsp) of bentonite clay with 6–8 ounces (oz) of purified water and drink once per day.

Take bentonite clay at least 2 hours before or after taking any medications. Because it can adsorb other molecules, bentonite clay may bind to some medications and reduce their effectiveness.
